Is Today a Holiday or Not?

Well, apparently many employees at the Oxnard DMV figured that it was and took the day off. The Ventura County Star reported that almost half of the 29 DMV employees didn’t show up for work today.

It is Columbus Day, my calendar says so. But with only 10 employees, what do you do? The management sent the workers to another DMV, and closed the Oxnard office.

Support Our Local Ventura Businesses

“What three independently owned Ventura businesses would you miss if they disappeared?”

“If half the employed population spent $50 each month in locally owned independent businesses, it would generate more than $42.6 billion in revenue.”

“For every $100 spent in locally owned independent stores, $68 returns to the community through taxes, payroll, and other expenditures.”

These three quotes sum up the idea behind the 350 project Pick three independently owned Ventura businesses you would miss if they were gone, spend a total of $50 each month in these stores (not $50 in each, just a total of $50), and in doing so save our local economy.

Lately you have watched the “Going Out of Business” signs sprout like aphids on a rosebush. Who knows when your favorite store will count itself as another casualty of this recession. It doesn’t matter about the love you give them unless that love means dollars that pay the bills. Lets give our favorite stores the support they need to make it through this crisis, that is where the 3/50 project comes in. There is nothing to sign up for, although you can be a supporter. This is just a personal commitment to your local community. Just as it takes a community so raise a child, it takes a community to support its best businesses.

This campaign was started less than two months ago by “your friendly neighborhood Retail Enabler” Cinda Baxter, the project began to grow exponentially with the launch of a website to serve as a focal rallying cry. Now there are retail participants in nearly every state, and the number of supporters is growing daily.

So you want to turn this economy around, and set it on a more sustainable course? You can start by committing yourself to the 3/50 project, and use it as a guide when making future purchases.

What independent Ventura businesses would you choose? Please let us what businesses you choose as your favorites this month.
